Manitou Makoons Gitigaan
Manitou Makoons Gitigaan is a 5 acre community farm located on Mooningwaanekaaning, whose mission is to reconnect and restore of Indigenous ways of life on the Island through building intercultural community healing, and support a just, regenerative and climate resilient food economy.

Vision
We vision a thriving Anishinaabek-led climate-resilient intercultural community, grounded in shared land-based values and practices. We vision our Island community being part of larger land-based ecological development strategies, trade networks, and community connectedness for climate resilience across our bioregion.
Production Farm
We produce traditional and organic produce, herbs, and flowers, and will be expanding into dairy, eggs, and meats. We are also planting a 40 tree community fruit and nut orchard in 2025.
Building Island Agricultural Resources
We are:
Establishing a mid-scale composting facility, Summer 2025.
Creating a community-access organic/traditional seed bank, Summer, 2026
Supporting the development of on-Island food processing infrastructure
Engaging in regional food economy partnerships, centered on Indigenous farms and food companies.
Supporting the development of regional climate resilience, fossil fuel free trade systems and economic policy
Weaving Resilience Center
Manitou Makoons has a history of being a community gathering, networking, and teaching space. We are developing our infrastructure and building a roundhouse to cultivate and expand what we can offer. It is a strong purpose of ours to organize towards resilient food trade within our broader bioregion and facilitate conversation, networking, and skill-building towards this end. We will be offering, from our collective and through bringing in our powerful local teachers, hands-on training in:
Natural building
Caring for Water and ecological wastewater treatment
Bioremediation of soils and water
Renewable energy strategies
Indigenous foodways, processing techniques, and medicinal plant relationships.
And developing a book, resource, and tool library to add to the on-Island spirit of community care that is already strongly present.
Community Healing
It is time for us to step into this era of healing the intergenerational trauma resulting from colonization. Some of our leads are Mind-Body Medicine facilitators, with deep experience in supporting communities to find pathways for restoration and renewal as well as personal reconnection and healing. We are preparing to offer this support at Manitou Makoons as well, building partnerships to offer trauma-informed Mind-Body Medicine and traditional practices to create decolonial healing spaces.
